Come on Seth surely it’s time to use Twitter!?

I was thinking about this the other day, nearly all of my news now comes via my Twitter feed not RSS readers. The subject of Seth and Twitter has come up on a number of occasions but surely now, with it’s vertical growth (51.6 unique visitors in July 2009 – ComScore) it’s time to start using it as a channel?!

I read Seth Godin’s blog and I enjoy it. It’s one of the Ad Age’s top Power 150 blogs which also shows it’s popularity among others.

Seth has certainly taken one sensible step in at least ‘claiming his space’ that is he appears to own the username ‘sethgodin’. Here’s what his profile currently looks like…

Why has Seth still decided not to use it as a channel?

Well here’s what he mentioned in a post on his own blog ‘Not Seth Godin‘…

I don’t use Twitter. It’s not really me. I also don’t actively use FaceBook, and I’m not adding any friends, though I still have an account for the day when I no doubt will. I also don’t use Flickr or MySpace or Meebo.

Two reasons why Seth doesn’t use Twitter;

1. He doesn’t want to use a tool unless he’s going to use it really well – this notion ties in well to another post that he made ‘How big is your farm?‘ whereby he mentioned the importance of managing your channels effectively and not taking too much on, which could have a negative effect on brand reputation.

2. He doesn’t want to put staff between himself and his audience. Mentioning that if he were to hold down a day job and interect with all the different social media tools effectively, he simply wouldn’t have time.

The orginal post written by Seth that quoted these reasons was posted way back in February 2008.

I have no doubt that they are still valid reasons for not using Twitter. However, part of me thinks with the inevitable growth of the Twitter channel and the impact it’s had upon marketing, can a marketing god like Godin continue to avoid it, or is it just inevitble that he will adopt it some time if the demand continues to grow?

Part of me also things that the reason he’s not is because people like me are asking him this question and he’s simply proving a point. He’s not a sheep..he’s a Purple Cow!
